The product

What is aker fassi?

A traditional Moroccan colour cosmetic, used for generations in Fes and across Morocco. Dried plant material is ground and pressed into a small clay pot. The pigment stays dry until water touches it — then it becomes a soft, buildable lip and cheek stain.

How do I use it?

Mist the pot or dampen your fingertip, swirl gently to pick up colour, then press onto your lips or the apples of your cheeks. Build in layers until you reach the depth you want.

What colour will it be on me?

It reacts slightly with the pH of your skin, so the exact tone varies from person to person. Most people land in a warm rose-red. Sheer with one layer, deep with three. It reads differently on everyone — that's the pigment doing its job, not a fault.

Does it suit all skin tones?

It's a single shade in the rose-red family. Lighter tones often prefer one sheer layer; deeper tones usually look best with two or three.

Will it dry out my lips?

The finish is matte rather than glossy. If your lips are dry, apply a balm first, let it settle for a minute, then press the colour on top. A balm over the top afterwards softens it into a glossier tint.

How do I remove it?

It's a stain, so water alone won't lift it. Any oil-based cleanser or micellar water removes it in one pass.

Should I patch test first?

Yes — as with any colour cosmetic, we recommend a patch test before first use. Dab a little on the inside of your forearm and leave it for 24 hours. If you have sensitive skin or a known allergy, check the ingredient list on your pot's packaging first, or write to us and we'll send it to you.

How should I store it?

Keep it dry between uses and close the lid. The pigment is water-activated, so leaving the pot damp or open in a steamy bathroom will soften the surface. Stored dry and closed, it keeps its texture indefinitely.

How long does one pot last?

Months, for most people. You only ever take what a damp fingertip picks up, so a single pot goes a very long way even with daily use.

Is the pot really handmade?

Yes. Each pot is thrown on a wheel, which is why no two are quite the same size, weight or shade of terracotta. Small marks, tool lines and slight wobbles in the rim are part of how they're made, not defects.
